Creating a Coastal Garden That Works with the Landscape
At Ginkgo Garden Design, we specialise in creating outdoor spaces that suit the Irish climate and natural surroundings. This coastal garden project in Rossnowlagh demonstrates how practical landscaping and thoughtful planting can transform a challenging seaside site into a functional and visually balanced outdoor space.
The property sits within an exposed beachside location where strong salt winds, sandy soil and open conditions created several design challenges. Due to the location, the planting and landscaping approach needed to focus on resilience as well as appearance.
The client wanted a garden that felt connected to the surrounding coastal landscape. The design needed to reflect the movement and softness of nearby sand dunes while still providing structure and shelter.
The completed garden now blends naturally into its environment while remaining practical and easy to maintain throughout the year.
Designing with the Coastal Environment in Mind
Coastal gardens require a very different approach compared to sheltered inland spaces. Every part of this project was planned around the conditions in Rossnowlagh.
Sandy soils and strong winds can make planting difficult without proper preparation. Many standard garden plants struggle in exposed seaside locations.
We wanted the garden to feel natural rather than heavily constructed. Flowing curves and soft transitions became a major feature throughout the layout.
We also worked carefully with the existing landscape rather than replacing it completely. The garden now feels established and connected to the surrounding dunes.
This approach helped preserve the natural identity and character of the site.
Retaining Existing Dune Grasses
One of the most important parts of the project involved retaining the existing dune grasses already growing on the site. These natural features became part of the overall planting scheme.
Preserving existing grasses helped strengthen the connection between the garden and the wider coastal landscape. For example, the movement and texture of the grasses reflect the nearby dunes naturally.
Existing dune planting already performs well in exposed conditions. Retaining these plants supported long-term sustainability and reduced unnecessary disturbance.
We also used the grasses to soften transitions between planted areas and open spaces. As a result, the overall garden feels more relaxed and natural.
Working with the existing landscape helped create a stronger sense of place throughout the project.
Coastal-Tolerant Planting for Year-Round Interest
Plant selection was critical within this coastal garden design. We chose hardy coastal-tolerant species capable of thriving in seaside conditions.
The planting palette focused on texture, movement and seasonal variation. Ornamental grasses and resilient flowering plants provide colour and interest throughout the year.
The planting scheme was designed to feel soft and natural rather than formal. The garden blends comfortably into the surrounding environment.
We also introduced Rosa rugosa hedging throughout the space. The garden gained shelter, structure and habitat value while maintaining its informal coastal appearance.
The hedging supports biodiversity and performs exceptionally well in exposed seaside locations.
Practical Screening and Shelter Solutions
Strong coastal winds often reduce the usability of outdoor spaces. Practical shelter solutions formed an important part of the project.
Chestnut paling screening was installed throughout key areas of the garden. The screening helps reduce wind exposure without creating a heavy or enclosed feeling.
The natural appearance of the timber complements the surrounding landscape beautifully. As a result, the screening integrates naturally into the wider design.
We also positioned the screening carefully to define spaces within the garden. The layout feels more structured while still remaining open and relaxed.
Subtle wind protection improves comfort and supports healthier long-term planting growth.
Elevated Decking and Low-Maintenance Lawn Care
The garden is overlooked by elevated patio decking which creates a strong connection between indoor and outdoor living. The layout encourages everyday use and enjoyment of the space.
The decking provides clear views across the planting and surrounding landscape. The raised position helps frame the garden while enhancing the sense of openness.
A low-maintenance clover lawn was introduced across the main open areas.
We also selected clover because it performs well in coastal conditions and requires less maintenance than traditional grass lawns. The space remains greener with lower upkeep.
Combining relaxed planting with practical lawn care solutions creates a more sustainable outdoor environment.
A Garden Designed for Coastal Living
This Rossnowlagh project demonstrates the importance of designing gardens around the surrounding landscape and local conditions. Every part of the garden was created to balance practicality, resilience and visual appeal.
The design supports biodiversity while remaining functional for everyday use. Naturalistic planting and habitat-friendly hedging improve ecological value across the site.
The landscaping works with the coastal setting rather than competing against it. As a result, the finished garden feels calm, natural and long-lasting.
At Ginkgo Garden Design, we combine practical landscaping, planting expertise and lawn care knowledge to create gardens that thrive in Donegal, Sligo and Leitrim conditions. Every project is designed to remain beautiful, functional and manageable for years to come.
