Biodiversity Focused Garden Services in Sligo
At Ginkgo Garden Design, we create outdoor spaces that combine practical landscaping with long-term environmental value. This multi-phase biodiversity project for Cliffoney Celtic demonstrates how thoughtful garden design and landscaping can improve both appearance and functionality within a busy sports facility.
Located in a coastal area of Sligo, the project required careful planning and practical solutions suited to exposed Irish conditions. Every stage of the work focused on durability, biodiversity and ease of maintenance.
The project was designed to support the daily needs of the sports club while improving the surrounding landscape. As a result, the grounds now provide a more welcoming and environmentally beneficial outdoor space.
Coastal Entrance Planting Scheme
One of the key parts of the project involved developing a large entrance planting scheme extending over 85 metres. Plant selection was critical due to the exposed coastal location.
We selected hardy coastal shrubs, feature trees and resilient perennials suited to Irish weather conditions. The planting was designed to tolerate strong winds, salt exposure and heavy rainfall.
Biodiversity played a major role in the planting design. The entrance now supports pollinators and wildlife while creating strong visual impact.
We also incorporated biodegradable weed suppression materials to reduce long-term maintenance requirements. The planting areas remain cleaner and easier to manage over time.
Decorative gravel finishes were added to improve structure and provide a polished appearance throughout the entrance area.
Native Hedgerow Installation
The project also included the installation of a native hedgerow along key boundary areas. The plant species selected had to suit the exposed coastal environment.
Native whips were carefully selected to improve long-term establishment and resilience. Hardy native varieties provide stronger growth and better environmental benefits.
The hedgerow supports biodiversity by creating habitat and shelter for wildlife. As a result, the landscape now contributes positively to the surrounding ecosystem.
We also designed the hedgerow to improve the visual structure of the grounds. The outdoor space feels more established and connected to the natural landscape.
Native hedgerows provide long-term environmental value while requiring relatively low maintenance once mature.
Composting and Green Waste Management Area
Practical garden management formed another important part of the project. A screened and roofed composting area was designed and constructed within the grounds.
The structure was planned to improve green waste handling and ongoing maintenance operations. Gravel access routes were installed to allow easy movement for ride-on mower use.
The composting area was screened carefully to maintain the visual quality of the grounds. As a result, the functional space blends naturally into the wider landscaping design.
We also ensured the area remained accessible and durable in wet Irish conditions. The club can continue using the facility efficiently throughout the year.
Proper waste management supports sustainable landscaping and healthier long-term lawn care practices.
Biodiversity and Pollinator Planting Area
A major feature of the project involved creating a dedicated biodiversity and pollinator area within the grounds. The design focused on supporting wildlife while improving drainage and visual appeal.
Irish wildflower seeding was introduced across large sections of the area. Native wildflowers help attract pollinators and improve biodiversity naturally.
Naturalistic perennial planting added structure, texture and seasonal colour. The space now provides year-round interest while remaining practical to maintain.
We also planted a small copse of native trees to strengthen habitat value and improve drainage conditions. The area supports both environmental performance and long-term landscape stability.
The biodiversity zone helps soften the appearance of the sports grounds while creating a more natural and balanced outdoor environment.
Landscaping Designed for Irish Coastal Conditions
This project required practical landscaping solutions suited to coastal Sligo conditions. Every material and planting choice was made carefully.
Exposed weather conditions influenced drainage, plant selection and long-term maintenance planning. Resilient coastal planting was essential for successful establishment.
Gravel finishes and durable landscaping materials improve performance during wet weather. As a result, the grounds remain more usable and manageable throughout the year.
Every part of the project was designed for long-term sustainability and functionality.
A Long-Term Investment in Outdoor Space
The Cliffoney Celtic project demonstrates how landscaping and biodiversity improvements can transform practical outdoor areas. It highlights the importance of designing spaces that work with the local environment rather than against it.
At Ginkgo Garden Design, we combine practical landscaping, planting knowledge and lawn care expertise to create outdoor spaces that last. Every project is approached with long-term performance and usability in mind.
We understand the challenges of gardens and landscapes across Donegal, Sligo and Leitrim. As a result, we deliver practical solutions tailored to Irish weather and coastal conditions.
